Nextdoor partners with NOAA to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods across America

San Francisco, CA, July 11, 2017 — Nextdoor (nextdoor.com), the free and private social network for neighborhoods, today announced it has joined the Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador initiative with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The initiative is NOAA”s effort to formally recognize partners who are improving the nation”s readiness, responsiveness, and overall resilience against extreme weather, water, and climate events.

As a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, Nextdoor will deliver hyperlocal, targeted weather safety and emergency messages and information to Nextdoor neighborhoods across the United States.

“Ambassadors are critical to building a Weather-Ready Nation,” said Louis Uccellini, Ph.D., Director of NOAA’s National Weather Service. “We welcome Nextdoor as a new ambassador who is committed to empowering its members with lifesaving information about extreme weather events.”

More than 146,000 neighborhoods across the United States, representing over 75 percent of the country, are using Nextdoor to connect, communicate, and discuss important local topics in their communities. During inclement weather, natural disasters, or times of emergency, neighbors repeatedly turn to Nextdoor as the primary way to communicate with others and ask for assistance. Now, neighbors will be able to find hyperlocal information regarding extreme weather, water, and climate events directly on Nextdoor.

“Local communities are often our first line of defense against any kind of disaster,” said Nirav Tolia, Co-Founder and CEO of Nextdoor. “We”re honored to partner with NOAA and share their mission of building communities and, ultimately, a nation that is ready, responsive, and resilient to the impacts of extreme weather events.”

Nextdoor is free for neighborhoods to use, and is available on Web, iOS, and Android devices. Neighborhoods establish their own Nextdoor communities, and all members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining Nextdoor.
